“As women, we tend to be relationship-based leaders. I know I am — I’ve created this atmosphere at the salon that’s very nurturing and says, ‘I genuinely care about you,’” she said. “Being emotionally involved is great, but if an employee leaves or a customer is upset, it bothers me to the point where I take it personally. As a result, you have to learn to develop tough skin and realize that you can’t please everyone. As long as I know we did the best we could, then that’s what matters.

“You can still lead with your heart. You can still care — that’s the gift we bring to the table as women. But you have to move forward when bad things happen and never stop taking care of the people who are still with you.”
