Devon Amsterdam hasn’t been in the liquor business for very long. Truth be told, he didn’t take ownership of Castle Spirits — a staple of Lewisville and nearby communities for the past decade — until March 2021. But have a quick conversation with him in the aisle as he helps you pick out a bottle of wine for your next holiday party or puts in a special order for you at the front counter, and it’s easy to see that he really knows his stuff.

Not to mention, perhaps no one is better at giving you every reason to look forward to visiting your neighborhood spirits store.

“It’s the small details that make a big difference,” Devon said. “We really get to know our customers, and our goal is to ensure people leave with the product they were looking for. If we don’t have a particular product, we’ll track it down.”

He added, “We offer a level of service you can’t find anywhere else.”

When the folks at Life in Castle Hills caught back up with Devon recently, he was busy doing what most of us are up to these days — getting ready for the holidays. For Castle Spirits, that means expanding their already impressive wine selection and referring back to notes he kept from previous conversations with patrons. Maybe it was the local businessman who needed a few extra cases of beer and wine for a company party or the newlywed couple who tried something new while on vacation and would love to add it to their home spirits collection.

Yes, they have the typical labels, distilled spirits, craft beer, and wine, but they also refine and rotate their selection by seeking out other products that aren’t always carried elsewhere. “We also keep up with the bourbon and tequila crowd and have brought in some pretty unique stuff in our wine selection,” he said. “The store is clean, and it’s not overwhelming. You can go elsewhere and find aisles and aisles of stuff. With less space at our store, it’s easier to find what you’re looking for.”

It’s not often that you walk into a liquor store and instantly feel at home. But that’s what has made Castle Spirits a special treasure since they opened their doors in 2012. Devon, Tony, Josh, and Dylan go above and beyond to ensure each customer feels comfortable and at home — inside the store or in the community.

Castle Spirits is constantly looking for ways to be more involved in the community, including sponsoring neighborhood events and sports teams and having a consistent presence at various holiday events throughout the year.

“We are glad to be part of this community,” Devon said. “It’s who we are. I can’t imagine doing business differently.”

Speaking of doing business differently, Devon and his staff now offer a delivery service through DoorDash, Uber Eats, and by phone. Another perk is that they always have quality samples ready to taste in-store — this way, you always know you’re bringing home a product you’ll enjoy.

The bottom line is that this isn’t your ordinary, run-of-the-mill liquor store. Castle Spirits has longevity in the community, customer service in its DNA, and an owner who genuinely wants to do right by everyone who walks in his front door.

“We always go above and beyond,” Devon said. “I think that’s an expectation customers deserve to have for their liquor store — especially with the holidays already upon us. You know where to find us if you need us for anything.”
