Toni’s Triumph – a Battle And a Surprise Makeover

All The Things Med Spa

Walking into All The Things Med Spa that December evening, Toni Bradfield thought she was attending a Christmas party. Turned out, the celebration was also for her.

A few months earlier, Courtney Keene, founder of All The Things Med Spa, and her staff had discussed doing something special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And Toni was about to receive that something special — the inaugural All The Things Makeover.

“I thought we were just going to support them and get discounts on fun stuff and look at all the things they had, and lo and behold, there was this big surprise,” said the Flower Mound resident.

The $8,000 package features the 10 specialists providing their services — including full face toxin, filler, facial/HydraFacial, IPL, laser hair removal, power brows, lashes, one month of medical weight loss, microneedle, a hair cut and color, and a body contouring package — all for free.

“I immediately looked at my best friend (Amanda Meier) and said, ‘I can’t believe you would do something like that and not tell me.’” Amanda and Toni’s sister Mechele had nominated her. “I was shocked. It took a couple of days to process what had happened.”

Toni’s fight with breast cancer began on March 10, 2020, just as the Covid-19 pandemic was hitting the world.

“My husband and I were at home doing some yard work,” Toni said. “I bent over and felt something and thought it was strange. I had never felt that before.”

The next day Toni went to her primary care doctor who sent her to get a mammogram. “It was a whirlwind,” Toni said. “Because after the mammogram, I immediately had an ultrasound. And literally, I sat up from the table, and she said, ‘You have breast cancer.’” The diagnosis was stage 2 hormonal breast cancer.

“I was all by myself, so one of the girls had to call my husband because I was a mess,” she said. “We had lost one of our baseball parents the year before to breast cancer, so the only thing in my head was ‘Oh my God, this is it. This is how I’m going to go.’ It was just awful.”

Toni works as the executive administrative assistant to the president at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound, and she knew some surgeries were being canceled due to the pandemic. However, the then-44-year-old was able to have a double mastectomy on March 23. That surgery and follow-up chemotherapy have kept the cancer away.

“At that age, you don’t think of getting something that serious,” she said. “But I went through it — I survived. You still have your struggles with things. You don’t feel the same as you did before, but you just have to know you beat it. Life goes on and you try to face those obstacles of a woman who goes through what it does to your body.”

All The Things Med Spa had asked for nominations of women who had survived breast cancer to tell their stories. Courtney had started on the committee to select the winner but soon bowed out.

“I quickly learned there was no way I was going to be able to pick someone because I wanted everyone to win,” Courtney said. “I didn’t even know who won until right before when they handed me the card. These women are just warriors. And living to tell the story.”

Courtney’s mother-in-law also battled breast cancer. “You can empathize with people who have it, but when it hits your family, it changes things for you,” Courtney said. “So we just wanted to do what we could and bring awareness to it, and it was really fun.”

So fun that Courtney and All The Things Med Spa plan to make the program an annual event.

“It’s a neat way to give back and to give awareness,” she said. “These women really walk through some tough days. It was something so fun for her. You can never replace those dark days. There’s so much pain and fear, and we can bring awareness to it.”

Tori began the All The Things Med Spa treatments in December, and she’ll probably finish in six to eight months.

“This is huge,” Tori said. “For someone who’s gone through this and whose body has changed so much, it will help me get some of my confidence back.”
