Women of Influence – Lynn Clark
Lynn Clark, Mayor of Hickory Creek
Embracing Community & Leadership in Hickory Creek
Lynn Clark, the Mayor of Hickory Creek, exemplifies a journey of unexpected leadership fueled by a deep love for her community. With a college degree in History and Literature with an Education emphasis, Lynn never envisioned a career in politics. She spent her early years as a stay-at-home mom and later as the Executive Director of a state trade organization. However, her life took a significant turn when she moved to Hickory Creek in 2000.
In 2003, at the invitation of a neighbor who served as Mayor, Lynn joined the newly formed Economic Development Corporation. Her enthusiasm for community development led her to run for Town Council in 2007, and in 2015, she became the Mayor of Hickory Creek. Lynn describes her political journey as a stumble into politics, driven by a genuine desire to serve her community rather than any political ambition.
Lynn draws professional inspiration from many women, with Denton County Precinct 3 Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell standing out as a significant mentor. Bobbie’s long history of service and unwavering support has been a source of encouragement for Lynn. She also cherishes the prayers, support, and mentorship from numerous friends who have been unsung heroes in her journey.
For young women aspiring to leadership, Lynn advises prioritizing listening over speaking and avoiding battles on social media. She emphasizes the importance of an “open door” policy, encouraging face-to-face interactions to understand and address concerns effectively. Lynn also believes in staying true to oneself, balancing personal and professional identities, and fostering compassionate hearts.
Lynn identifies honesty and integrity as crucial qualities of a successful leader. She reflects on a challenging election period where she chose not to retaliate against unfounded accusations, instead focusing on a guiding Bible verse, Philippians 4:8. This principle of maintaining focus on truth and honor has been central to her leadership style.
Balancing the demands of being a mayor, Lynn acknowledges the importance of setting boundaries and knowing when to say “no.” Despite the inherent stress, she finds immense joy and stress relief in spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren. Travel and family gatherings, including grandkid sleepovers, provide her with the necessary respite.
In addition to her mayoral duties, Lynn serves on the Board of Directors of PediPlace and United Way’s Mental Health Behavioral Leadership team. She also connects with other mayors through Denton County Judge Andy Eads’ Mayors Council, fostering collaboration and shared community goals.
Lynn Clark’s leadership in Hickory Creek is marked by her dedication, integrity, and genuine care for her community. Her story is a testament to the power of unexpected paths, driven by a heartfelt commitment to serving and connecting with people across Denton County.
