Dr. Courtney Carpenter, the Superintendent of Argyle Independent School District, has dedicated her career to impacting lives through education. Inspired by her mother and stepfather, both educators, Dr. Carpenter witnessed firsthand the profound influence teachers can have on their students. This early exposure fueled her passion for education, leading her to pursue a career that spans nearly three decades.
Graduating from Sam Houston State University in 1998, Dr. Carpenter went on to earn a Master’s Degree from UNT in 2001 and a Doctoral Degree from Dallas Baptist University in 2019. She began her career as a third-grade teacher and later taught math in grades 6-11. These roles provided her with a comprehensive understanding of instructional practices and curriculum development.
Early in her career, Dr. Carpenter discovered a passion for mentoring teachers and adults, realizing that she could make a broader impact on the school community. Transitioning from teaching to campus administration and then to district-level leadership, she has continually advocated for strong public school relationships. Entering her 27th year in education, she remains dedicated to supporting and leading school communities with unwavering enthusiasm.
Dr. Carpenter draws inspiration from numerous influential women throughout her career. In 1998, she was mentored by a remarkable woman leader who encouraged her to leverage her talents for a greater purpose. A significant influence was Judy Walling, former Deputy Superintendent of Midlothian ISD, who provided guidance and coaching that shaped Dr. Carpenter into the leader she is today.
For young women aspiring to leadership, Dr. Carpenter offers sage advice: be confident and maintain integrity, humility, and resilience. She emphasizes the importance of being a role model, listening to understand, and continually stretching one’s abilities. Dr. Carpenter believes women of all ages can be inspired by seeing women in leadership roles.
She identifies key qualities of a successful leader as being an effective communicator, relational, dependable, humble, and energetic. Dr. Carpenter stresses the importance of honesty, approachability, loyalty, and passion in leadership. She believes that leaders must love what they do and inspire those around them with their enthusiasm.
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for Dr. Carpenter. She prioritizes family time, ensuring she attends her college-aged children’s events, and values outdoor exercise to take care of her physical health. This balance helps her manage stress and remain effective in her role.
Dr. Carpenter is committed to honoring Argyle ISD’s past while creating a bright future. She is passionate about setting high expectations for herself and those around her, maintaining a visionary approach and refusing to settle for the status quo. Her leadership is characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence and a dedication to fostering an environment where students, teachers, and the community can thrive.
