Understanding Patient Individuality
The renowned philosopher Socrates spoke two famous quotes on the topic of individualism. The first is, “To find yourself, think for yourself,” and the second, “Only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” At first glance, the arguments seem contradictory in that “knowing nothing” creates a danger in “thinking for yourself” since a lack of knowledge may misdirect your self-awareness. Now I know what you are thinking,”this is a little heavy-handed for a simple dental article,” but bear with me as I explain.
It is often that a typical elder individual visits my practice for diagnosis of a dental concern and simply states, “Just tell me what to do, doc.” This is a patient whose perceptive wisdom appears to say in regards to understanding dental care that they “know nothing”, though more often I believe it is likely their faith in their provider and assurance of a professional opinion.
On the other hand, it certainly occurs that I see a patient who takes the role of, to coin the phrase, “Dr. Google.” This patient arrived prepared with researched knowledge of the potential symptoms and causes of their dental interest. This person takes value in “thinking for themselves” and directing their desired approach.
So, who is correct? When it comes to healthcare consent, it’s really both. The concept of your healthcare autonomy is not one to take for granted. It is important as a provider to ensure that a patient seeking care is fully educated on the causes, the means of diagnosis, and the potential treatment options and risks associated.
At the same time, it is important that a trusting provider-patient relationship exists for any paths chosen in receiving care, so that the treatment received is both desired by the patient and capable from the provider.
Country Lakes Family Dental is committed to creating an open, welcoming environment where communication thrives, allowing patients to feel heard and understood. We believe this enhances the quality of care, fostering long-term relationships and positive dental experiences.
At the end of the day, it is all about having a healthy communicable relationship that allows for the education of both the dentist and the patient.
The end result will be one where both of you can find satisfaction so you can experience, as a wise man once said, “Happy smiling!”
