Marta Layton admits that she has to remind herself to go to bed at a decent time most nights. Like any busy small business owner, she is used to packing a lot of to-dos into a single day and finishing things off with quality time with her husband, Mike, and their young children, Dominic and Natalie. But when it’s late at night, and things have quieted down to barely a peep in their Flower Mound home, Marta is the last person considering getting some much-deserved sleep.
Instead, she can be found lounging on the couch with her laptop, experimenting with various kitchen designs. Her screen glows with full-scale renderings of imaginative layouts, and her mind races with ideas as she swaps colors and cabinets, daringly removes load-bearing walls to achieve functionality, and tests lighting schemes—all while envisioning how the space will feel when it’s brought to life.
“I love making each rendering look perfect and pretty for my clients, so it’s easy for me to lose track of time,” Marta said. She is the owner and lead independent designer at Sunday Morning Kitchen and Bath. “The entire process … it truly is addictive.
“When my clients see me swapping things in and out and how much fun it is, they say, ‘My God … how do you ever stop?’” Such is the life and creative mindset of an award-winning kitchen and bathroom designer.
In October, the DFW chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association recognized Marta with the prestigious Kitchen and Bath Award in the Large Contemporary Kitchen category. This is a big deal for several reasons. It exemplifies Marta’s commitment to meticulous space planning, custom cabinetry, and modern design elements that reflect elegance and functionality. More importantly, it shows her creativity and passion for large-scale renovation and remodeling projects and how highly sought-after Marta has become in just one year of owning her business.
As one of the few independent designers in the area, she is certified through the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Besides the most recent award — her first solo award — the Poland-born creative has been part of five Contractor of the Year awards.
As for the award-winning home — it’s right here in Flower Mound. The owners came to Marta with the idea of transforming their kitchen and the functionality of their entire home as they prepared to start a family. A few of their challenges included an enclosed kitchen that was disconnected from the rest of the house, limited storage due to low cabinets and redundant windows, and appliances that didn’t match their needs.
Their new kitchen now features a spacious layout perfect for entertaining, a walk-in pantry with a frosted glass door for ample storage, and a new door to their office from the hallway. The previous opening between the kitchen and office was enclosed to build the pantry.
The living room was expanded by moving the fireplace wall. There is also plenty of natural wood-look cabinetry, paneled appliances, and matte black metals for a sleek, modern aesthetic. Double-stacked wall cabinets replaced redundant windows, while previously unused kitchen space became a stylish bar area.

“You don’t want to do a large remodel unless you have someone who can do accurate renderings and provide video walk-throughs,” Marta said. “You don’t want to be guessing. You want to use your time to explore options and play with the space — maybe a bigger pantry and smaller island or a bigger island and remove a wall that doesn’t need to be there.
“That’s what I provide for people — the chance to see the space as it could be and pick what works best for their family.”
There are countless renovation projects for which Marta could easily win awards. The photos with this article show Marta in the reimagined kitchen of a client’s home in Highland Village. When they saw the finished project, the wife texted Marta, saying, “You made my kitchen dreams come true.”
“Seeing my clients’ reactions makes me incredibly happy,” Marta said. “The awards are amazing, but I’m happiest when I can help people visualize their dream space and improve their lives. I genuinely love what I’m doing.”
