Smart Irrigation – Water Wise Gardening Guide

While common advice suggests watering infrequently but deeply, this approach may not be ideal for smaller lots, where extended watering can lead to significant runoff and water waste.

Since every landscape is different, it’s crucial to test your irrigation system to ensure you’re not losing water to runoff.

Check that all sprinkler heads are spraying efficiently and providing adequate coverage, and make sure there are no leaks. If you notice water runoff after only a few minutes of watering, it’s better to set your system to run for shorter periods more frequently. Also, keep in mind that once established, trees and shrubs require less water than turf, so adjust your irrigation controller accordingly.

Mulching: A Simple Solution for Healthy Plants

Mulching is one of the most effective ways to grow healthy plants and conserve water. It protects your plants, helps retain moisture near the roots, prevents erosion, and suppresses weed growth.

A layer of mulch about 3 inches thick is typically sufficient for most areas. When applying mulch, ensure it is spread evenly and avoid piling it up against tree trunks or the bases of plants.

Smart Cutting: Pruning and Mowing Tips for Hot Weather

When temperatures rise, it’s important to minimize how much you prune your shrubs and mow your lawn. Cutting back too much can stress trees and shrubs, especially during hot weather.

For your lawn, allowing the grass to grow a bit taller and thicker helps retain moisture at the base, reducing the need for frequent watering and keeping your lawn greener between mowings.

While a neatly trimmed, low-cut lawn may look appealing, cutting the grass too short exposes the base of the blades, increasing the risk of burning.
