Scorching Texas Summers

Complete Solutions

As we all know, Texas summers can be scorching, and this year is no exception. The heat can take a toll on everything — from plant material and soil conditions to grass, pools, and foundations. As temperatures are staying warm, here are a few things to keep in mind for your landscape.

Lawns

With days over 100 degrees, many lawns will suffer from burn, thinning, or even complete die-off in exposed areas. Consistency is key when caring for your turf — consistent watering, cutting, and fertilizing are essential.

As you assess replacement options, consider all factors between turf types and their requirements to ensure you choose something that will look good at installation and continue to thrive for seasons to come.

As temperatures drop, gradually reduce watering and mowing height. Important factors to consider include sun exposure, grade, irrigation layout, soil types, and maintenance options.

Plant Material

Don’t be too quick to pull out seemingly dead plants. Conduct a proper check to ensure they are truly dead.

Many plants drop foliage as a survival tactic during extreme heat, and others may suffer severe burns with scorched and fallen leaves but can still recover.

Remember to adjust irrigation, ensuring everything gets hydrated but has a chance to dry out before sunset.

Ground Conditions

Ground conditions have been unpredictable. If you’ve noticed your pool, patio, or house shifting due to soil drying, maintain consistent watering without overwatering to the point of pooling.

Adequately hydrated soil is less likely to expand or contract to a noticeable extent. The high clay content in our area makes it challenging to get the water rate right, as even slight changes can cause movement.

It’s a good idea to have a licensed irrigation company check your system at this time of year to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can help your landscape recover from the extreme heat and prepare it for the cooler months ahead.
