Let’s be Friends : North Texas Women’s Club
North Texas Women’s Club
Living without friends is lonely as well as unhealthy. It’s scientifically proven that loneliness is frequently at the root of such undesirable conditions as mental depression and a variety of physical illnesses. The age-old wisdom telling us that no man is an island remains as relevant today as it was when the adage was first coined. It may be even more accurate to say “no woman is an island” since the emotional support of friendships, especially girl-friend relationships, seems more critical for females than for males. Meeting potential friends, and transforming those meetings into lasting and satisfying relationships, isn’t always easy.
First, where do we meet these special people called friends? School? Continuing education classes as we become older adults? Church communities? Workplace environments? Activities revolving around children or grandchildren?
Dog parks, where we interact with other animal lovers? Those are all good suggestions, but somewhat hit-and-miss.
Sometimes, the path to making friends is serendipitous; when circumstances line up and lead us to people who happen to share a life page with us. We connect over a shared, but unplanned, cup of coffee. Or we sit next to someone in a doctor’s office, and confess our concerns over test results. Or maybe it’s someone next to us on an airplane. Quite literally, our health, welfare, peace, and happiness are frequently dependent on these people we refer to as friends.
Many details of specific women’s clubs, such as who founded the individual clubs in targeted geographical locations, are lost. We do know the North Texas Women’s Club began as the Greater Lewisville Newcomer’s Club 50 years ago. It launched with a specific purpose: To promote friendships, provide opportunities for social contacts, and to promote programs and activities that meet the varied needs of all residents of the Greater Lewisville area, including Lewisville, Flower Mound, Highland Village, and surrounding communities. In other words: Let’s be friends.
Mimi Buzbee spent 47 years of her life in Austin, where she raised two daughters and lost her husband to dementia. “My daughters married and moved to the DFW area,” Mimi explained. “It seemed my logical next step was to move to the DFW metroplex, which I did. After that, it was a matter of making new friends and developing supportive relationships, none of which was easy.” Remember the serendipitous circumstances discussed above? That became the path leading Mimi to a group of new girlfriends.
“I moved here three years ago,” she said. “I met a lady from Lantana one year later, and she suggested I attend a North Texas Women’s Club meeting. I followed her advice, and after just one visit, I knew I’d found a group of women with whom I shared a lot of the same common denominators. It didn’t take long to realize it was a perfect place to make new friends.”
The NTWC holds meetings the second Tuesday of each month in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist church, located at 1251 Valley Ridge in Lewisville. Prospective members are invited to attend one general meeting at no charge before deciding to join. The membership chair’s contact information is: judy.p.buckingham@gmail.com.
“NTWC stays true to its purpose of promoting friendship-making,” Mimi emphasized. “The opportunities provided for expanding social contacts and activities are amazing. There are numerous mini-clubs within the club to address specific needs and social variety. There are individual groups who pursue activities such as Pinochle, Mah Jongg, Bridge, cooking, Canasta, antiquing, book groups, gardening, and dining adventures. We also offer some extremely interesting speakers. Our January 14 meeting will have a representative of Victory Therapy Center. The topic will be ‘Caring for physical, mental, and emotional needs through the healing power of horses.’ I personally think this is going to be fascinating. Dave Tanner – a Dallas musician, band leader, and general entertainer – will be the speaker for February. March will be our Spring/Summer Fashion Show.
“We have approximately 125 members, which is down since COVID. We’re looking to expand that number, which is simply another way of saying we’re looking to add friends. There’s no reason for anyone to be lonely with 125 people, or more, standing by your side.”
