The Denton County Sheriff’s Office is proud to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of its Communications Division following the DENCO 911 Banquet. The division received six awards recognizing exceptional leadership, teamwork, training, professionalism, and service to the community.

Brittany Sparks was named Operations Professional of the Year. As Communications Assistant Manager, Brittany oversees daily operations while supporting the immediate needs of the Communications Center and the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the division running efficiently. She is the division’s only EMD-Q-qualified staff member, consistently assists with training and staffing needs, maintains critical CAD information and maps, and works to support employee morale through initiatives such as group activities and an Employee Spotlight Board.

The Telecommunicator Team of the Year award was presented to Sofia Whitmire, Robert Byrd, Loryn Thomas, Adam Warfel, Jamye Arrington, Stephen Hodgson, Nicole Heyer, Rocio Rodriguez, Bre Garrett, Brandon Shields, and Sherry Stone. The team demonstrated exceptional teamwork during the September 21, 2025, severe weather event, when emergency call volume increased dramatically due to straight-line winds, structural damage, and fire-related incidents. Working alongside law enforcement, fire, EMS, and surrounding agencies, the team remained focused on answering calls, coordinating resources, and protecting the community and responding personnel well into the night.

Brandon Shields was honored as Supervisor of the Year. Brandon has completed more than 1,000 hours of training while continuing to work a radio channel and supervise his team. His dedication to professional development, technical knowledge, and consistent leadership makes him a dependable resource for the Communications Center.

Adam Warfel received the Silent Hero award for his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment to supporting his coworkers. As a mentor, Adam provides guidance to less experienced employees and helps foster a positive work environment.

Stephen Hodgson was named Telecommunicator of the Year for his professionalism, compassion, and ability to remain calm under pressure. During a critical incident involving an armed suspect and a Justin Police Department officer, Stephen quickly coordinated assistance and managed critical radio traffic, helping support a safe resolution. He also consistently provides compassionate and professional service to callers and fellow first responders.

Emily Lopez was recognized as Trainer of the Year. Since joining the agency in 2019, Emily has conducted more than 1,100 hours of training. She provides personalized instruction, clear expectations, and meaningful feedback while helping new telecommunicators develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed.

Every day, these employees answer the call, support first responders, and serve the community with excellence.
