Building Hope, Healing, and a Safer Future

In the heart of Denton County, compassion and community strength come together through the work of Denton County Friends of the Family (DCFOF). For more than four decades, this organization has been a steadfast source of safety, healing, and empowerment for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Founded in 1980, DCFOF remains the only nonprofit in Denton County solely dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by these traumatic experiences.

At its core, the mission of DCFOF is simple yet profound — to provide compassionate, comprehensive services to those impacted by rape, sexual abuse, and domestic violence while partnering with the community to promote safety, hope, healing, justice, and prevention. It’s a mission that has transformed countless lives, and one that continues to evolve with the community’s needs.

A Milestone Moment: breaking ground for the future

In October 2025, DCFOF marked a monumental milestone with the groundbreaking of the Denton County Family Justice Center (FJC) — a visionary project that represents a new era of coordinated care for survivors and their families. The FJC
will unite multiple essential agencies under one roof, providing a trauma-informed, collaborative space where survivors can access everything from legal advocacy and counseling to safe housing and community resources.

“This project is about so much more than a building,” said Toni Johnson-Simpson, MSW, Executive Director of DCFOF. “We’re creating a launchpad for growth, healing, and generational change.”

The groundbreaking drew more than 200 community members and local leaders, including representatives from Denton County government, law enforcement, city officials, and major community donors. Their presence signaled not only broad support but also a shared belief that safety and healing should never be out of reach for anyone in need.

Phase one of the project focuses on expanding safe housing options for survivors — a critical first step in building the full vision of the Family Justice Center. Once complete, the FJC will stand as a beacon of hope and collaboration, strengthening the safety net for individuals and families across the county.

Empowering Through connection and compassion

Beyond groundbreaking events and new facilities, DCFOF’s impact is felt daily through its wide range of free services. These include a 24-hour crisis line, two emergency shelters, legal advocacy, counseling, play therapy for children, and specialized support programs like the
Battering Intervention & Prevention
Program (BIPP).

For teens, the organization offers activity therapy and educational programs aimed at breaking cycles of abuse and fostering resilience. Through its Survivor Advocacy Team (SAT), DCFOF ensures that survivors receive immediate and compassionate support, often meeting them in hospitals or at court.

Even Upscale Resale, DCFOF’s thrift store on Dallas Drive, plays a vital role — not only supporting the organization financially but also providing clients with access to clothing, household goods, and a sense of dignity during difficult times.

Community Support makes it all possible

The success of DCFOF’s mission relies heavily on the community’s involvement from their dedicated volunteers to their generous donors.

“We truly could not do this without the people of Denton County,” said Heather Lehr, DCFOF’s Director of Marketing and Development. “Every volunteer hour, every donation, every event shared on social media helps build a stronger, safer community for survivors.”

Those looking to get involved can email volunteer@dcfof.org or visit dcfof.org to donate directly. The organization also welcomes local residents to attend community events, awareness campaigns, and prevention education programs that strengthen ties between residents and law enforcement while promoting early intervention and understanding.

Looking Ahead: building hope for a safer future

As DCFOF continues its essential work, the organization’s focus is firmly on the future — particularly on the completion of the Family Justice Center.

“By reducing barriers to support, we’re creating a clear path to safety, stability, and healing,” Heather said.

The Family Justice Center project has already been fueled by the generosity of the Rayzor Family, Denton County Commissioner’s Court, and Denton City Council. But as Heather emphasized, the journey ahead will require sustained
community engagement.

“Without local support, this critical resource for survivors in Denton County cannot become a reality,” she said.

For those interested in making an immediate impact, donations can be made directly through the organization’s website. Anyone wanting to learn more can reach out via communityrelations@dcfof.org or by calling 940-387-5131 ext. 104.

A Legacy of healing and hope

After more than 45 years of service, Denton County Friends of the Family continues to embody resilience, compassion, and community partnership. Their work proves that healing is possible, safety is achievable, and together, Denton County can create a future free from violence.

Heather reflects, “Every story of survival begins with a moment of connection. It could be someone answering a call, someone opening a door, someone saying, ‘You’re safe now.’ That’s what we do, every single day.
