Starting in 1958, Mansel Smith or “Smitty” as his friends and family called him, opened the doors of Smitty Floor Covering, and the family business has grown since then. He was an ambitious businessman and an original Texan, born and raised.
Currently run by his granddaughter Natalie Smith and her brother Brian Smith, Smitty’s is still in the business of family and flooring.
Smitty is described as a “good old guy” by Natalie and has an interesting history. Smitty worked in flooring prior to owning his own company. After years of experience under his belt, he started his own endeavor, establishing Smitty Floor Covering. Natalie and Brian’s grandmother and Smitty’s wife Virginia worked alongside her husband for many years. The company was passed down the family line to Natalie’s dad and aunt, Ricky Smith and Aunt Darlene Smith Rogers, then to Natalie and Brian.
Besides working in flooring, Smitty had the creative and unusual hobby of pigeon racing, and he passed down the joy of the sport to his son. Smitty would climb the roof of the Denton Courthouse to capture the pigeons and then trained them to fly distances of five to 500 miles.
