As the owner and director of Northwest Carrollton Kumon, Darshana’s journey began in 2003 when a conversation with a friend led her to explore the Kumon Method. Coming from a family of educators in India, including university professors, Darshana always felt a strong pull toward teaching and lifelong learning.
Once certified in Kumon’s Math and Reading programs, she opened her own center and began building what has now become a cornerstone for hundreds of students in the community.
What Makes Kumon Different?
Darshana is quick to point out that Kumon’s success lies in its individualized approach. “Each child works on a customized plan based on their mastery of concepts,” she explains. “They progress at their own pace, not according to grade level or external benchmarks.”
Unlike traditional tutoring models, Kumon isn’t designed to help children simply catch up — it’s about teaching them how to learn independently. This principle of self-learning is one that Darshana holds dear.“I truly believe in self-learning,” she says. “When children develop the ability to figure things out on their own, that skill carries them through school, work, and life.”

22 Years of Growth and Lessons Learned
Running a business for over 22 years has taught Darshana more than any textbook could. One of the greatest lessons? Persistence. “My journey has taught me not to give up easily,” she reflects. “Working with students every day requires patience, empathy, and a lot of heart.”
Over the years, she has helped thousands of children strengthen their math and reading skills, but more importantly, she’s helped shape their mindset toward learning. Watching her students grow into confident, capable individuals is what fuels her passion.
A Memorable Milestone
One of the most rewarding experiences of her career came from a student who nearly quit the program in middle school due to the demands of a busy schedule. Instead of letting him walk away, Darshana encouraged him to stay the course.
“I helped him understand the long-term benefits of sticking with it,” she recalls.
That student not only completed Kumon’s math and reading curriculum — reaching a 12th-grade level by the end of 9th grade — but went on to work for Darshana as an assistant until graduating high school.
Years later, he sent her a heartfelt thank-you note upon graduating college with a degree in actuarial science. He credited his academic and professional success to the Kumon curriculum and Darshana’s mentorship.
“It’s stories like that which remind me why I do what I do,” she says.

Darshana’s love for her work is rooted in her desire to create lasting impact.
