Ask the Dentist: Are Clear Aligners a Good Choice for Your Teen?

Venturing into your child’s infamous teenage years is definitely not for the faint of heart.  When we engage in their usual teenagerly mannerisms, we can often find appreciation in recognizing that they are no longer a child, yet not quite an adult. 

 Though, in our attempt to empathize with them, we may find the greatest mystery we ask ourselves is, “Did we really behave like that?”  Though we may never admit it, we probably did, but there is a reality that these are crucial formative years that not only guide the youth into their adult character, but also in their health, specifically oral health.

When it comes to orthodontic care, we find the teenager years as an opportune time to take advantage of their growth in order to, not only move teeth, but retain them.  Consequently, adding orthodontic treatment during a stage when responsibility is not at its best can also affect overall oral hygiene and health. The balance of these concerns may be best achieved for your teenager with clear aligners like Invisalign or other aligner brands.

The advantages of clear aligners, when they are indicated, is that it takes away many of the downsides of traditional orthodontics, like brackets debonding, food traps, loose or sharp wires, and aesthetics for reserved teens.  With aligners, trays can be removed not only to eat, but to brush and floss to help maintain good oral hygiene.  

Aligner therapy in general tends to have more individual tooth control to allow faster treatment times.  Also, in the case when your teenager’s teeth move from not wearing their retainer, holding onto their previous aligners can help them get back to their retainer position without restarting treatment.
