A Moving Tale – Enabling Movement Foundation
In a world that hustles by at a relentless pace, it’s easy to take for granted our ability to move. For individuals with disabilities, however, the joy of movement can sometimes feel like an unattainable dream. Yet one remarkable nonprofit organization in Flower Mound is dedicated to making that dream come true.
Led by local pediatric physical therapist, Julie Brown, and occupational therapist, Joan Cain, the Enabling Movement Foundation aims to ensure that every individual, in spite of their limitations, has the opportunity to feel the freedom that only motion can provide.
Founded on the belief that movement is a universal human right, the Enabling Movement Foundation works tirelessly to enhance the lives of those with disabilities by providing them with accessible exercise environments. Their mission is simple yet profound — to promote independence and enable all individuals, regardless of their physical capabilities, to engage in activities that bring them joy and improve their quality of life. This is accomplished through adaptive technology and exceptional community support.
One of the foundation’s hallmark initiatives is the “Cruising Cyclers” program, an innovative outdoor cycling experience designed for individuals with various mobility challenges. These heartwarming rides occur on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month during the warmer seasons. With the sun illuminating their paths, participants hop onto adaptive bicycles, each specially designed to meet their unique needs, whether through hand cycles, tricycles, or tandem bikes. Such activities become more than just rides. They transform into beautiful opportunities for connection, camaraderie, and shared purpose.
As the cyclists pedal down Flower Mound’s scenic trails, infectious smiles spread across their faces, radiating pure joy and exhilaration. You don’t have to look far to witness the transformational
impact of this program. Moments like these exemplify the positive atmosphere the Cruising Cyclers program cultivates.
“If you look at the scientific evidence, movement is so vital to our overall health and wellness,” Julie shares. “It’s been a dream of mine to share that with those with disabilities.”
In addition to the cycling program, the Enabling Movement Foundation recently partnered with Special Abilities of North Texas to continue to bridge the gap in accessible exercise environments. This recreational facility acts as an adaptive gym filled with specialized equipment that allows individuals with disabilities to exercise and gain mobility. This commitment ensures that Flower Mound becomes a community where those who might have felt isolated in the past can engage in active participation and social connection.
Utilizing the adaptive gym services of Special Abilities of North Texas as a pilot program, Julie hopes to one day open her own facility in Flower Mound. Not only would it implement adaptive technologies to serve those with disabilities, but the envisioned center would also focus on building a warm, welcoming environment where individuals with special needs can share their stories and triumphs. The
facility would also serve family members and caregivers as well, giving them a vibrant space where they could exercise alongside their loved ones.
But to achieve this ambitious mission, the foundation needs the support of the community in the form of donations and volunteers. Fundraising events are critical in providing the necessary resources for their programs. A huge part of their philanthropic campaign focuses on their annual charity golf tournament known as the Movement Matchup. Now in its third year, this tournament is held at Indian Creek Golf Club in Carrollton. Scheduled for October 23, the fundraiser offers opportunities for local business collaborations, donations, or volunteering. Every contribution plays an invaluable part in enhancing accessibility and independence for people with disabilities.
If you wish to get involved, consider taking part in the Movement Matchup, volunteering your time, or simply spreading the word to your friends and family about the incredible work this foundation is doing. With the support of the community, the Enabling Movement Foundation can continue to ensure that every individual with special needs in North Texas has the freedom to move, explore, and thrive. By working together, independence is not just a dream, but a delightful reality for all.
