A Bittersweet Transition

The Flower Mound Police Department recently marked a meaningful moment of transition — honoring one remarkable K9 officer’s retirement while welcoming a new four-legged partner to continue the legacy of service.

Ahead of a recent Town Council meeting, K9 Officer Ares was celebrated with a special retirement ceremony, recognizing an extraordinary seven-year career. Since joining the department in 2019 alongside his handler, Officer Rodney Adame, Ares became a vital member of the Narcotics Unit. Over the course of his service, he was deployed 416 times, participated in 77 community presentations, and played a key role in numerous drug investigations across North Texas.

Ares’ impact reached far beyond local operations. Beginning in 2020, he assisted the DEA Dallas Enforcement Group 2, contributing to some of the largest drug seizures in the unit’s history. His work helped detect and remove staggering amounts of illegal narcotics, including millions of fentanyl pills, thousands of kilograms of methamphetamine, and significant quantities of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. His efforts also led to the seizure of more than $10 million in assets. More than the numbers, Ares represented dedication, precision, and an unwavering commitment to keeping the community safe.

Now retired, Ares will spend his days at home with Officer Adame and his family, trading patrol shifts for backyard play, well-earned rest, and a new role as a loyal companion and protector at home.

As one chapter closes, another begins. The department recently introduced K9 Officer Maverick, a 1-year-old German Shorthair Pointer from the Netherlands, as its newest addition. Partnered with Officer Michael Moore, Maverick is already stepping into his role with energy and enthusiasm.

Trained to detect a wide range of narcotics, Maverick uses subtle changes in behavior to alert his handler, demonstrating the discipline and skill essential to K9 operations. Though new to the force, he has quickly adjusted to both his professional duties and life at home, where he enjoys time with his new family — including two dogs, two children, and even a few curious chickens and rabbits.

Together, the retirement of Ares and the arrival of Maverick highlight the ongoing dedication of the Flower Mound Police Department to protecting and serving the community — one loyal partner at a time.
